Our grantmaking in Philadelphia/Southeastern PA focuses primarily on funding local non-profit organizations that provide at-risk communities with improved access to education, food, healthcare, housing, and legal services. We support organizations that demonstrate leadership and innovation in service of at-risk communities within their areas of focus.
When evaluating potential grant recipients, we look for organizations for which our grants can provide meaningful financial support of current and proposed programming. We look for, and review, up-to-date tax returns and audited financial statements. Financial discipline is important to us. Most of our grants are unrestricted and made in support of an organization's annual general operating expenses. Annual grants typically range from $2.500 to $20,000; we will occasionally make larger and multi-year commitments that support capacity-building and capital campaigns.
Although we are not presently accepting formal grant proposals from new grantees, we welcome "letters of introduction" (via e-mail to philly@bennettfoundation.org) from non-profit organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area which are providing the types of services summarized above. Below is a sample of organizations that we have supported in the Philadelphia/Southeast Pennsylvania area and beyond in recent years:
